At the heart of the New South Wales coastline, Sydney is a pulsing hub of culture, history, and natural beauty, internationally renowned for its spectacular landmarks. But beyond the iconic sites of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, there’s a city bursting with hidden gems that the everyday traveller could easily pass by without ever knowing. Whether this is your very first visit to Sydney or you’re a regular visitor, we reveal some of the lesser-known sites harboured within the city for a unique and memorable stay.
Distance from hotel: 8-minute drive
Location: Lavender St, Lavender Bay
Tucked away in Lavender Bay, Wendy's Secret Garden is a lush oasis hidden in plain sight. Situated on the outskirts of the central business district, the paved tree-lined paths and lush grounds will have you feeling worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Yet right before you, you’ll find spectacular views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, enough to dazzle even the most seasoned local. If a more peaceful approach to sightseeing away from the crowds is your style, you’ll want to add this to the top of your itinerary.
Distance from hotel: 10-minute drive
Location: Kendall Ln, The Rocks
Step back in time at The Rocks Discovery Museum, located at the core of Sydney’s original settlement. Occupying three buildings dating all the way back to 1844, discover the city’s fascinating history, from colonisation to the transformations undergone to become what it is today.
Distance from hotel: 10-minute walk
Location: 30 Balfour St, Chippendale
Calling all art enthusiasts: Take delight in exploring the White Rabbit Gallery, where contemporary Chinese art takes centre stage throughout four floors of diverse exhibitions. Converted from an old warehouse, the displays are bound to captivate the imagination of art fanatics and even fascinate those who aren’t. Important: Be sure to stop in at the Tea House to try their out-of-this-world handmade dumplings!
Distance from hotel: 9-minute drive
Location: Hickson Rd, Barangaroo
Certainly in the running for what could be argued as Sydney’s best picnic spot, Barangaroo Reserve is a stunning waterfront parkland converted from what was once an abandoned container storage site. And what a transformation it was! With fabulous views of the Harbour Bridge, the six hectares of generous landscape is dotted with public artworks and lush native shrubbery, offering a scenic location to grab some takeaway from one of the many surrounding cafes and restaurants and bask in the beautiful natural surrounds.
Distance from hotel: 13-minute drive
Location: Challis, House 4/10 Martin Pl
What was at first a temporary project now permanently occupies an uncharacteristically quiet alleyway in Sydney’s CBD. The unique and thought-provoking installation consists of a collection of empty bird cages strung high above the street level of Angel Place. The somewhat eerie yet mystical sight is made ever more moving with the songs of over 50 birds floating down from above - the chimes of what was once heard before the post-European settlement and colonisation of the city forced them out.
We urge you to venture the path less trodden and uncover some of Sydney's fantastic lesser-known attractions. And when the days come to an end, Vulcan Hotel welcomes you back with open arms.
