Staying Near ICC Sydney: A Business Traveller's Guide to Ultimo

When you're travelling to Sydney for a conference, exhibition or corporate event, the last thing you want is a complicated commute. And while staying close to the venue is convenient, it shouldn't mean paying big-chain prices for a room that looks like every other hotel you've stayed in.

If you're searching for hotels near ICC Sydney, Ultimo offers the perfect balance of convenience, comfort and local character. Just a short walk from the convention centre, Vulcan Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel that's been welcoming travellers since 1894.

We've put together a practical guide to staying at Vulcan Hotel near ICC Sydney, from getting around to finding the best places to eat and unwind between meetings.

Why Stay in Ultimo for an ICC Sydney Event?

Tucked between Darling Harbour, Central Station and Sydney's CBD, this vibrant neighbourhood puts business travellers within easy reach of the city's major event and entertainment precincts.

From our front door on Wattle Street, ICC Sydney is around a 15-minute walk, taking you towards Darling Square and the convention centre. No taxi queues, surge pricing or public transport required.

It's an easy walk and a good chance to clear your head before a morning keynote or wind down after a day on the exhibition floor. If the weather turns, taxis and rideshares can drop you at ICC Sydney's designated points on Darling Drive.

Unlike Sydney's larger hotel precincts, Ultimo has a relaxed neighbourhood feel, with independent cafés, heritage buildings, excellent restaurants and plenty of opportunities to explore beyond the conference floor.

Getting to Vulcan Hotel from Sydney Airport and Central Station

Another important consideration when choosing ICC Sydney accommodation is how easily you can get there after arriving in Sydney. Fortunately, Ultimo is well connected for both domestic and international travellers.

Arriving from Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport is approximately 8 kilometres from Vulcan Hotel, with several transport options available.

The quickest option is the Airport Link train from either the domestic or international terminal to Central Station, which takes around 15 minutes. If you'd rather go door to door, a taxi or rideshare from the airport to Ultimo usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day.

Arriving from Central Station

Central Station is one of Sydney's major transport hubs. It’s about a 14-minute walk from Vulcan Hotel, so if you're travelling light, you can stroll straight over. If you're arriving with a heavy suitcase or travelling during wet weather, a short taxi or rideshare trip may be more comfortable.

Heading straight to ICC Sydney? The L1 light rail connects Central with the Exhibition Centre and Convention Centre stops. You can also walk towards Darling Harbour via The Goods Line, a leafy elevated pedestrian walkway through Ultimo.

Where to Find a Working Breakfast or Client Dinner Spot

A good coffee and a satisfying breakfast can make all the difference before a full day of presentations and networking. Ultimo has a fantastic selection of independent cafés where you can start your morning, catch up on emails or prepare for the day ahead.

Start the day at Café Vulcan

Our in-house Café Vulcan serves barista-made coffee from 7 am and continental breakfast from 7:30 am to 10 am on weekdays, complimentary with every stay.  It's an easy way to fuel up, check your inbox and run through your slides before walking over to the venue. Need to host a few colleagues? The café can also be booked for small gatherings; just ask our team.

Explore Ultimo’s local cafés

If you're meeting someone around the neighbourhood before the day kicks off, there's plenty within a short walk. ON Baked Croissant and Cozy Corner Ultimo are both local favourites for a quick coffee and a pastry, and Darling Square, about 10 minutes away, has a wide range of cafés on the way to ICC Sydney. You'll find more ideas in our guide on things to do in Ultimo.

Client dinners worth booking

When it's time to take a client or your team out, you won't need to venture far.

  • Encasa: Serving Spanish tapas, paella and sangria for over 40 years, and ideal for a relaxed, shared-plates dinner with a group.
