Ultimo is a laid-back inner-city Sydney suburb full of tree-lined streets and students. Although it’s the home of University of Sydney, UTS and TAFE campuses, there’s plenty to get up to in Ultimo even if your student days are long behind you. The Powerhouse Museum

Along with Sydney Observatory, the Powerhouse is one of the venues of Sydney’s Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. With permanent exhibitions that will teach you all about sound and light, mind-bending machines and the science of climate change, the Powerhouse also has an ever-changing line-up of unique events.

With more than 1,000 stalls across two locations (Ultimo / Haymarket and Flemington), Paddy’s Markets is a colourful, vibrant indoor bazaar bursting with goodies and gifts. Swing by to pick up some fruit and veggies, hot food, fashion and souvenirs.

Ultimo Dining

Whether you’re in the mood for a romantic dinner out or just a light lunch, Ultimo has a stack of options to satisfy every taste. To taste the work of the chefs of the future, try The Apprentice, a hospitality training restaurant at Sydney TAFE. Down Kensington Street you’ll find Spice Alley, a laneway with six street-food-inspired Asian eateries lit by overhead lanterns.

Visit the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre on Harris Street and, while we can’t guarantee you’ll be able to swim like the five-time Gold Medal-winning Olympic champion, you’re certain to have a great swim regardless. With three heated indoor pools, a spa, health club and café, the centre will leave you satisfied.

Walk the Goods Line

Once the railway line from Central Station to Darling Harbour, the Goods Line is now an easy, family-friendly pedestrian and cycle path. You can walk it in half an hour or you can take your time: sitting in the grassy green spaces, reading in one of the study pods or stopping to look in one of the local attractions like ABC, UTS or the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
